Healthy Fast Food?

Hello Foodies – Did you read the title properly? Read it again. Yes! There is such thing as healthy fast food.

When I talk about fast food I’m not saying McDonalds or Burger King, but instead convenient healthy alternatives that you can throw in your briefcase.

Most of the time people purchase fast food since its quick and convenient. Taste plays a small factor when going through the drive through at a fast food  joint. Believe me I know a double Big Mac is yummy after a break up or a bad day but I feel terrible after I swallow the quadruple patty burger and the next morning my scale waves its ugly dial at me.

Well since our issue is convenience, I went out in search of healthy alternatives at my neighborhood grocery store.

Some Healthy Fast Food Suggestions

Mini Tuna Cans – They are small, come in a bunch of flavors and also have easy open tops. Who needs a can opener?

Liberté 100g Fat Free Fruit Yogurt – My favorite yogurt of all time! Now in pocket size! The yogurt comes in a number of fruity selections and I had to re-read the label to make sure it said no fat because it was so good. Great filling yogurt alternative.

Pre-cut Fresh Vegetables – Great for dipping and snacking!

Fruit Boxes – Last week I had only 5 minutes to scour a grocery store for  something healthy and came across a plastic container with chunks of fresh pineapple. Why not? To my surprise, when I opened the container there was a mini fork too! Genius! Most if not all grocery stores have a variety of fruit boxes.

Starbucks Bistro Boxes

Mini Carrots – They keep well and are very filling!

Starbucks Bistro Boxes – A bit on the expensive side but these boxed meals are a great example of healthy fast food options. The next time you’re at a Starbucks look through these boxes and get some ideas on how you can  prepare your own fast healthy lunches.

Salad/Turkey – In university I was always strapped for time and found myself spending money on pizza that would never fill me up. One day I came across pre-packaged salad containers. They came in a variety of combinations and in a good portion size. To make this into a meal I also found pre-cooked turkey slices. In the morning I would open my salad and throw in a handful of turkey and cover it back up. The turkey was always fresh and the meal filling! I recommend trying buttermilk ranch dressing! Renee’s salad dressings come in a variety of flavours and are also sold in convenient small packets.

Believe it or not but each item came out to under $10. Also by planning your to go meals ahead of time will help you stay away from fatty fast food.
